Birmingham, UK, meetings industry recovers ahead of average
New industry research has shown that Birmingham, UK, recouped at a quicker rate than the national average.
According to data compiled by RJS Associates for the West Midlands Growth Company, the region’s 2022 business events performance was approximately 78% of its 2019 levels. Included in this figure are business meetings, conferences and events. The result demonstrates a significant recovery when compared to the national average of 73%.
In 2022, Birmingham hosted 8.3 million local, national and international delegates (82% of 2019 levels) at 81,700 business events. It contributed $2.3 billion to the regional economy and supported 43,000 full-time equivalent jobs.
“We are encouraged that this latest events data shows that Birmingham is resiliently spearheading the sector’s reemergence after a period of great difficulty during the pandemic,” said Neil Rami, chief executive of the West Midlands Growth Company. “We are determined to use the positive energy from the Birmingham, UK, 2022 Commonwealth Games, coupled with exciting new developments, to ensure that organizers continue to pick Birmingham as our events sector completes its recovery.”
Based on a full calendar of planned events at major Birmingham venues, including the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), industry leaders expect a complete return to pre-pandemic levels during the 2023-24 financial year.
