North Queensland welcomes renovated Cairns Convention Centre
Located on the shores of the Great Barrier Reef, the Cairns Convention Centre recently revealed its multi-million-dollar restoration and expansion. The award-winning venue, operated by ASM Global since it first opened in 1996, will now be able to host simultaneous events as well as larger conferences that require breakout spaces.
The Queensland Government invested $176 million into the venue’s recent large-scale renovations. Highlights of the expansion are the Trinity Room and Terrace level, which overlook Trinity Inlet, and a large undercover Porte Cochere, which serves as a functional event space and features native, tropical flora.
The expanded venue also delivers an additional 113 square feet of meeting, banquet and exhibition space, including:
- An exhibition area for 30 booths
- A 450-seat theater-style plenary lecture space
- Three configurable meeting rooms
- A 500-person capacity Trinity room banquet space
- An outdoor terrace
- A spacious lobby for pre-event functions
Already an eco-tourism destination, Cairns looks to further capitalize on the international business events industry with a renewed convention facility that complements the region’s natural, pristine beauty. The overall design, led by agency Cox Architecture, mixes sophistication and modern technology with the area’s relaxed ideology.
“We are already receiving positive reactions to the new spaces, with clients impressed with the contemporary design and light-filled areas that feature our lush, tropical rainforest in the background,” said Janet Hamilton, general manager of Cairns Convention Centre. “We sit at the heart of one of the world’s most beautiful destinations, and great care and consideration was taken to bring the natural environment into the center’s spaces.”
