In celebration of its 200th anniversary in 2024, the National Gallery London is launching a series of important capital projects designed to carry on its legacy of bringing people and paintings together.
The gallery will spend a year on forward-looking projects to be completed by May 2025, including:
- A major refurbishment of the ground and first floor of the Sainsbury Wing, creating large reception spaces for up to 1,000 people
- The renovation of its 328-seat Lecture Theatre to maximize technological capabilities, ensuring full accessibility and an upgrade of the lighting, seating and carpets
- The creation of a new Supporters House to allow supporters to eat, drink, relax and socialize, with a variety of spaces that can be hired exclusively for private parties and events for up to 100 people
- A reimagined public realm outside, creating a square within a square.
In addition, the National Gallery will also offer a year-long festival of art, creativity and imagination to set the tone for its third century.
